The number one question we get asked at our markets is, “How do you get such long stems?” And a close second is, “How do you get your flowers to last sooo long in the vase?” This workshop will answer both questions. We’ll begin by walking the fields and talk about which varieties of cut flowers benefit from techniques such as pinching, disbudding, and deadheading and when and how to do it in a way that supports not only a healthier plant, but one that produces a maximum number of long stemmed blooms in a season. We’ll also talk about methods and types of fertilization for some of the heavier feeders and when and how to water to preserve bloom quality for vase longevity. Then we will harvest buckets of flowers, fillers, and foliage together, with clear instructions on how to pick, pack and condition each kind of flowers for the best and longest vase life.
The second half of the workshop we’ll move to the studio, where we will practice designing both hand tied bouquets and simple vase arrangements using the flowers that we harvested. Phoebe will talk about the “recipes” she uses to build classy, texture filled bouquets using line, focal, and filler blooms. She’ll also teach about proportions, stem placement, movement, balance, vessel choice, and color theory. You’ll leave with two gorgeous bouquets and a notebook filled with notes about how to create beautiful arrangements from your own garden.
All vases, tools, and supplies will be provided but attendee’s may want to bring a pair of gloves to protect their hands.
